Phew! Quite a deep dive.

I'll probably need an extra pass (or ten) to grasp all the nuances, but for now, it's enough for me to know that ANN falls for illusions just like I do.

It just goes to show that machines are exactly as dumb as we are, which I am sure was the entire point of your post. Take that, AI!

PS: Admit it, that Rotating Snakes image totally is a GIF, isn't it? I promise not to tell ANN.

It certainly is way easier to just equate AI to human brains but the more we dig into human brains and realize how little we actually know the more we have to accept 'it's complicated.' Great essay that covers a lot of detail.

Your writing is vibrant and fast paced in this piece, very enjoyable and chocked full of substance well within reach. Excellent work! The difference between low-level and high-level performance is really interesting. I’ll be on the lookout for your next post. Thanks, Suzi!

I'm late to the party on this one but… whenever I see the question "Do Neural Networks See the World Like Us?", I want to ask whether octopuses see the world like us? What about cows? What about blind people? What about my friend Roni, who is colour-blind?

The answer is "Of course, they don't see the world like us". What you have given us here is a splendid description of how they are different but I have no doubt that they will get more same-y as time goes by.

Happy New Year, Ragged Clown!

Yes, good point. I'm not even sure people with 'normal' colour visions see the world the same.

I wonder about the move towards being more same-y, too. And I wonder what things are necessary for that move.
